Chiara Tonelli

ENG. Chiara Tonelli is Vice-Rector for research and Professor of Genetics at the University of Milan, and leader of the group of Plant Molecular Genetics at the Department of Biosciences.
Chiara Tonelli is the President of the Scientific Committee of Fondazione Umberto Veronesi.
Current member of the European Molecular Biology Organisation (EMBO), and former member of various scientific committees and advisory boards in Italy and abroad. She currently sits in the evaluation panel of the European Research Council (ERC) for the allocation of Advanced Grants, and is a member of the Scientific Committee of the JPI European Programme "Healthy Diet for Healthy Life." Former member of the European Commission Advisory Group on "Food, Agriculture and Biotechnology." Current member of the board of the European Plant Science Organisation (EPSO). Former member of the Patents and Technological Transfer committee of the University of Milan, the Committee of Biology and Medicine of the National Research Council (CNR), and the Commission for Biosafety of the Ministry of the Environment. She has published over 100 articles on international scientific publications and led several projects sponsored by Italian agencies and the European Union. 
She cooperates as a reviewer with several scientific publications Molecular Cell, Molecular and Cellular Biology, EMBO Journal, Plant Cell, Plant Journal, Plant Molecular Biology) and research grant agencies (USDA, EMBO, TWAS, Human Frontier, ERC). Since 2005, she acts as the Secretary General of the international conference "The Future of Science," a series of conferences focused on science and the society which brings together leading experts from various disciplines, to present and discuss the impact of scientific development on the society.  
Her scientific interests range from the foundations of plant biology to biotechnological applications. Her studies focus on deciphering the logics behind transcriptional and gene regulation in plants, both during their development and in their interaction with the environment

ITA.  Chiara Tonelli è Prorettore alla Ricerca e professore di Genetica all’Università degli Studi di Milano, e leader del gruppo di Genetica Molecolare delle Piante presso il Dipartimento di Bioscienze. È presidente del Comitato Scientifico di Fondazione Umberto Veronesi. È membro della European Molecular Biology Organisation (EMBO). Ha fatto parte di numerosi comitati e Advisory Board scientifici in Italia e all’estero. Attualmente è membro del panel di valutatori del Consiglio Europeo della Ricerca (ERC) per l’assegnazione degli Advanced Grants, e membro del Comitato Scientifico del Programma Europeo JPI "Healthy Diet for Healthy Life". Ha fatto parte dell’Advisory Group su "Food, Agriculture snd Biotechnology" della Commissione Europea. È membro del Consiglio dell' European Plant Science Organisation (EPSO). È stata membro del Comitato Brevetti e Trasferimento Tecnologico dell’Università degli Studi di Milano, del Comitato di Biologia e Medicina del Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR) e della Commissione per la Biosicurezza del Ministero dell’Ambiente. Ha pubblicato oltre 100 articoli su riviste scientifiche internazionali e ha guidato numerosi progetti finanziati da agenzie italiane e dall’Unione Europea. 

Collabora come revisore con numerose riviste scientifiche (Molecular Cell, Molecular and Cellular Biology, EMBO Journal, Plant Cell, Plant Journal, Plant Molecular Biology) e agenzie assegnatrici di fondi di ricerca (USDA, EMBO, TWAS, Human Frontier, ERC). Dal 2005, Chiara è Segretario Generale della Conferenza Internazionale "The Future of Science", un ciclo di conferenze di Scienza e Società che riunisce eminenti esperti di varie discipline per presentare e discutere l'impatto del progresso scientifico sulla società nel suo insieme.  

I suoi interessi scientifici spaziano dagli aspetti fondamentali della biologia delle piante alle applicazioni biotecnologiche. L’obiettivo principale dei suoi studi è decifrare la logica del controllo trascrizionale e della regolazione genica in piante  sia durante lo sviluppo, sia nell’interazione con l’ambiente.

The cycle of the Future of Science conferences

ENG. Today more than ever, our society requires the dissemination of science to be a prerogative of informed people, capable of making decisions led by rationality and knowledge rather than fear.  The Future of Science conference series was inspired by the awareness that the problems and dilemmas posed by scientific and technological development often lack adequate fora for discussion. 
In the previous editions, we dealt with issues such as the DNA revolution, the role of nanoscience in treating diseases and protecting the environment, longevity, precision medicine and the digital revolution. 
The title of this year's conference – The Lives To Come – epitomizes the essence of The Future of Science, whose guiding principle has always been to look beyond the present. 
One of the most pressing challenges of science is nutrition. As scientists we have a moral duty to rethink the sustainability of what ends up on our plates every day, while stressing the importance of healthy eating in curbing the development of various diseases. Another issue is the need of an increasingly customised medicine, capable of reading through the huge volume of information written in our DNA. And there are even more challenges ahead. Today, thanks to the focused stimulation of our immune system, we are able to keep some previously untreatable forms of tumour under control. 
As the future of science starts from the present, a scientifically informed society has a strong need for conferences like ours, speaking to the younger generations. 

Il ciclo di conferenze The Future of Science 

ITA. Oggi più che mai la società ha bisogno di scienza tramite persone informate capaci di prendere scelte dettate non dalla paura ma dalla razionalità e dalla conoscenza. L'idea del ciclo di conferenze “The future of science” nasce dalla consapevolezza che i problemi e i dilemmi generati dal progresso scientifico e tecnologico non sempre trovano spazi di discussione nella società. 
Nelle passate edizioni ci siamo confrontati con temi quali la rivoluzione del Dna, il ruolo delle nanoscienze nella cura delle malattie e nella salvaguardia dell'ambiente, la longevità, la medicina di precisione e la rivoluzione digitale. 
Il titolo che abbiamo deciso di dare quest’anno, “The Lives to Come, La vita di domani”, riassume l’essenza delle conferenze “The Future of Science”, da sempre animate dallo spirito di “guardare oltre” il presente. 
Una delle più importanti sfide è quella relativa alla nutrizione. Se sarà fondamentale alimentarsi in maniera corretta per limitare l’insorgenza di diverse patologie, abbiamo anche il dovere etico di ripensare alla sostenibilità di quanto ogni giorno finisce sulle nostre tavole. Altra sfida che dovremo affrontare è la necessità di una medicina sempre più personalizzata, che sappia leggere quell’immensa mole di informazioni scritte nel nostro DNA. Ma non solo. Oggi attraverso la stimolazione mirata del sistema immunitario stiamo riuscendo a controllare alcune forme tumorali che in passato non lasciavano speranze. 
Il futuro della scienza comincia dal presente e conferenze come questa, rivolte alle giovani generazioni, sono indispensabili per una società scientificamente informata.
