Biopharmaceuticals: Present and Future Perspectives

The span of my career has seen enormous strides in the development of biopharmaceuticals, from therapies derived from human plasma to many recent innovations in protein engineering, gene therapy and gene modification (among others). Using specific examples of each, some of the current successes will be discussed and the learnings from efforts to bring exciting ideas from the laboratory into the hands of clinicians will be presented as directional guidance for what is yet to come. Ethical dilemmas encountered along the way will be positioned as cautionary tales for what is on the horizon and suggestions offered for providing the educational and vocational preparation for the next generation of development scientists to excel. A final discussion of regulatory and governmental challenges will provide the audience with some ideas about what can be done to facilitate the introduction of current and future therapies.
